TOP 10 VIDEO GAMES OF ALL TIME
This is it, the list you thought we’d never dare to do. Today we’re concluding our series of the best video games per generation to bring you our picks for the top ten video games of all time. If you’ve been following our video games per generation series, you’ll know that fifty games were selected as some of the best.

But only ten can make this list. In order for a game to qualify for best of all time, it needs to have made at least rank four or higher in its respective generation list to get on here. So if your favorite didn’t make it onto this list, that’s why. Personal bias has no room here, get ready for the mother of all video game lists as we show off the industry’s finest accomplishments.

10. Goldeneye 007 (1997)

Just scraping into the opening slot is the movie tie-in game that brought FPS multiplayer to the living room. Yet despite only having one analog stick and no online play it still holds out better than a lot of shooters that have come out since. With a strong single player campaign that’ll keep you coming back as you try to unlock the prestigious 007 mode, and a multiplayer section which was amazingly added as an afterthought, Goldeneye is that one cartridge that you’ll never give away.

9. Resident Evil 4  (2005)

OK, so it’s actually the sixth game in the main series, but the beauty about this game is that you don’t need to have played the previous entries to know what’s going on. In fact, not knowing what’s going on is pretty much par for the course for a Japanese game. Resident Evil 4 was a thrilling yet terrifying experience, from dealing with the psychotic infected villagers to the creepy Regenerators. Fans like to hate on this game because of the sequels that followed, but for what it is by itself, there’s no denying how masterful it was put together.

8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

If there was one word we’d use to describe Skyrim, it would be “massive”. This game goes out of its way to make sure everything is vast, from its open world, to its diverse skill tree, loads of quests, and plenty of customization options for your character. Plus, there are dragons. Big ones. Be careful not to get lost in this game, cause it's really easy to go wandering and end up in a cave full of giant spiders or mummified Draugers.

7. Mass Effect 2 (2010)

The sci-fi epic that became the apex of what western RPGs should accomplish, The Mass Effect series drew inspiration from all the right places, with enough lore to rival Star Wars and Trek. The second game used a concept first seen in Seven Samurai, where as Commander Shepard you travel various parts of the galaxy to recruit an team of memorable characters to save the galaxy in one of the greatest final missions ever created. Shepard’s story may be over, but we’ll never forget the incredible journey.

6. Portal 2 (2011)

First of all: “Cake” … now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, we can say that no other game of the last generation brought more creative innovation than the Portal series. Portal 2 has everything a great sequel should be by giving us the well written humorous dialogue of Wheatly and GLaDOS, while also giving us well-crafted puzzle rooms to take on solo, or share the thinking challenge with a friend. It’s also a game that we can safely predict will age very well.

5. Chrono Trigger (1995)

Square are indeed the JRPG kings with their Final Fantasy series, but their best work came with this time-traveling epic. A master class of storytelling, the game is still as emotionally hard-hitting as ever, and just like Mass Effect, it too contains an iconic cast of memorable party members. Not to mention the game also comes with thirteen endings, each of them as vastly different from one another. Some say Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs of all time, and we're inclined to agree.

4. Super Mario World (1991)

Mario had a lot of games in contention for best of all time, with Super Mario Brothers 3 and Galaxy 2 also eligible. But as the apex of 2D Platforming, Super Mario World knows no equal. The 16-bit sprites still look amazing today, and with the inclusion of multiple routes, secrets galore to discover, and ninety-six different exits to find, there’s plenty more to come back to once you’ve defeated Bowser and saved the Princess.

3. Half Life 2 (2004)

There are few games in history that still feel brand new a decade after they’ve been released. Yet Half Life 2’s revolutionary emphasis on physics based combat and puzzles still puts it leaps and bounds across most FPSs today. Valve’s second game on this list really shows how the company has become true pioneers for gaming, while still giving us amazing experiences, and yes we can see the irony of putting this series at number three.

2. Tetris (1984)

The game that’s over thirty years old yet is as addicting and challenging to play today as it was when it came out. There have been many variations throughout the years, but its core gameplay remains the same as this Russian classic is still played by hundreds of thousands today. In fact it’s now the best selling video game of all time, thanks to being so accessible that it can be played on almost any device with a screen and a few microchips. Tetris games is a true timeless classic.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

Before we get to the most iconic spot of all, let's have a look at some honorable mentions. We know this game is at the top of almost every other all time list out there - feel free to search for yourself. And believe me, we tried hard to find a successor, but when comparing precise gameplay, revolutionary mechanics, well paced storylines, replay ability, fantastic level design, combat variety, and capturing the scope of an epic adventure, no game has even come close to matching what Ocarina of Time has achieved. Whether you have your old N64 cartridge, digital version on the Virtual Console, or you're taking it on the go with the 3DS remaster, this Nintendo masterpiece is our pick for the greatest game of all time.

TOP 15 SCARY HIDDEN THINGS IN VIDEO GAMES

15. Paper Mario
Though nearly all games created in the Mario universe are created for younger players, many adults find fun in the countless games for years to come. Still, some small easter eggs or mishaps seem a bit too dark for the original intended audience of children.

Especially one house from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. In the U.S version of the game there's a house in the back alley of Rougeport Main Square, in this house it appears as though someone has broken in and ransacked the place. This alone is enough to be unsettling to an extent, a break-in and robbery attempt is quite an adult concept.

However, the original Japanese version is even worse. There appears to be red stains covering the floor and walls, and there’s a chalk outline apparently in the shape of Toad. Obviously, this implies a heinous crime. Although the scene isn’t focused on, it is really dark for such an innocent game and is considered to be one of the most upsetting easter eggs in video game history, even all these years later.

14. The Infinity Killer
This easter egg is seen as more of a simple fact by some players, as it is so integrated into the game. Still the way everything is presented, makes for a great entry. In the GTA 5 universe in December 1999, 8 male joggers were murdered and buried in San Andreas.

These murders were deemed the Infinity Murders after the killers obsession with the number 8 and his infamous quote “8 is just infinity turned sideways”. Merle Abrahams was the psychopath responsible for this event and though he is never seen in the game, he is mentioned various times and nearly his entire backstory has been pieced together thanks to Easter Eggs and fan theories.

The clues to this character include graffiti on rocks, newspaper clippings, and a message left inside Merle’s own home. The simultaneous absence and strong presence of this killer is what makes his story truly creepy to players and fans.

13. Black & White 2: Whispered Names
The Black & White game series blends real time strategy and God game elements. It was originally released in 2005, though this Easter Egg comes from it’s sequel a few years later. When the game is played after 10:00pm the game will whisper your name in a very ghostly and disheartening voice.

The game uses an algorithm that takes a variety of stored names and then compares it to your screen name or profile name to correctly call out to you. This is certainly scary for first time players that do no expect the feature. Even worse is imagining this happening with headphones in as you play alone in the middle of the night.

12. Assassin’s Creed II, The Kraken
The Assassins Creed game series is best known for being historically accurate when it comes to general details and technology. Of course there are some fantasy features that makes the game far from perfect when it comes to history, but this detail was extremely unrealistic compared to most of the game, which makes it considerably scary to some players.

While solving a puzzle in a specific tomb of the game, a massive Kraken can be seen motioning through the water below. This game is set in Renaissance era Italy, so the mystical beast feels rather out of place. This isn’t the only time that the creature makes an appearance, either. In Assassin’s Creed 4, the Kraken is seen destroying a shark outside an abandoned ship. This location makes much more sense as the game features more pirate-like themes, still the fact that this hard to ignore creature is barely discussed or featured doesn’t help it’s case.

11. Animal Crossing & Harvest Moon
The community game Animal Crossing features villages where the players live with anthropomorphic animals and carry out various tasks like building items and decorating locations. The games have been known to be quite obsessive for players thanks to open-ended game play and the community interaction.

In the game, however, if you watch the TV at 3:33 am a small dark alien appears and suggests that it is watching you. In media, 3:33 am is often associated with evil, the spirit world, extraterrestrial abduction and more. Though the scenes are always short and relatively harmless, it’s still unsettling for what is supposed to be a childrens game.

In Harvest Moon, a game very similar to Animal Crossing, something similar happens with the TV. However, in this case it occurs at 4:44 am and instead of a little alien stalking you, you see the number 4 repeated over and over again in both English and Japanese lettering. In Japanese culture the time 4:44 am holds the same meaning as 3:33 am for American culture. Additionally, the number 4 is meant to symbolize death. A very morbid warning for such a light hearted game.

10. Half Life 2: The Standard Zombie
The Half-Life series began in the late 1990’s and features various mutants or zombie-like creatures. The Standard Zombie is the most common creature or monster in the game series and it involves a standard Headcrab attaching to a victim's brain and taking over their nervous system to essentially control their body.

The zombie’s are already a sore sight being grotesque and only partially human. However, to make them even worse they constantly create guttural noises of despair that sound uncomfortably human. Specifically when you set one on fire, their screams almost sound like words. Apparently a lot of players agreed with this notion because it was eventually discovered and shared by many that this dialogue was actual human speech reversed.

When edited to play forward, the zombie’s scream in pain “Help. God help me”, which makes the idea of these poor victims even more tough to get through. Many players obviously see them as mindless enemies but playing this human voice with the action gives a “real life” aspect that many were not prepared for.

9. Ratman Dens
Doug Rattman is a character from the game series Portal. Rattman began as an Aperture Science employee. After some conflict he eventually came to live in the Test Chambers and maintenance rooms of the facilities as his sanity quickly deteriorated. He spent much of his time scribbling on the walls of the chambers and the remains of his presence can be experienced by players as they travel through the long abandoned locations.

In Portal, his scribblings give information about his obsession with Companion Cube, directions and warnings for the player, and of course the popular phrase “the cake is a lie”. In Portal 2, the messages prove Rattmans survival and help guide the general story forward. Despite how useful the Rat Dens are to the player and story, they still provide a creepy aspect simply by demonstrating the insanity of a once brilliant man, as well as the horrible living conditions he was forced to endure.

8. Luigi’s Shadow
This one is also known as “hanging Luigi” and fans have debated for years whether it’s a true creepy easter egg, or just an inconvenient glitch. In the game Luigi's Mansion, this scene can be found just after the Boss Battle of Area 3. Luigi finds his way to the telephone room and answers two phone calls, during the second call a very cinematic lightning flash illuminates the room.

Luigi’s shadow, which is cast upon the wall, is distorted in a way that apparently shows Luigi hanging. Again, it’s still unconfirmed whether this is a true easter egg that comes off a little too dark for a child’s game, or a simple glitch that made for great lore years after the release of the game.

7. Fatal Frame Screensavers
The Fatal Frame game series is all about using film to fight evil spirits. The series has received acclaim over the years and even has various spin-off media related to the concept. One of the most memorable aspects of the series though, is the featured screensavers that double as easter eggs and jumpscares.

Basically, if the player leaves the game idle for more than 5 minutes, a screensaver appears to scare the player. In Fatal Frame 1, the image was bloody handprints. In the second and third versions of the game, effectively disturbing ghost faces are used. Considering the first game was released in 2001, this was new and unique for it’s time and helped create the idea of interactive horror games that step into the real world, even if only for a second.

6. World of Warcraft: Children of Goldshire
The World of Warcraft series is an online interactive gaming community with fantasy characters and endless quests. The WoW platform was initially released in 2004 and has had gamers hooked and interested ever since with expansion packs, updates and more. This Easter Egg has many layers to it which make it not only unsettling but intriguing as well.

The Goldshire Children are a group of 6 school aged children that travel together in a sort of pack. They can be found in and around Goldshire in Elwynn Forest but they never go far from their home in Stormwind City. The children’s names are Cameron, John, Jose, Lisa, Dana and Aaron. When they travel together they appear to not only walk in sync but also never breaking the shape of a pentagram which faces different directions depending on the day.

Theories suggest that the characters are inspired by Children of the Corn, a classic horror film based on Satan  worshipping orphans. If you follow the children to their home, they form their pentagram shape and simply stare forward. Allegedly various sounds can be heard while in this setting. Everything from a banshee scream, and C'Thun saying, "You... Will... Die." to a ghost howling or a woman crying have said to be heard in this location.

5. Timesplitters 2: Mission Failure
Timesplitters is a first person shooter game released in the early 2000’s. Mission Failure is a mysterious easter egg that occurs in the second game of the series. When the player fails a mission either by losing their health points, falling into a bottomless chasm, or failing an objective in Story mode, Challenge mode, or Arcade League.

After the character “dies” if the restart screen is left unattended for a period of time, a slow, deep and unnerving audio track is played over the idle screen. Clearly, it sounds like something from a nightmare. Eventually fans became curious and sped up the audio track to find that it is actually Captain Ash's dialogue from the beginning of the Aztec Ruins level slowed down significantly to create this dreamy and spooky audio. While the backstory for this isn’t that creepy or even mysterious, the general presence of the audio before players were able to edit it caused a lot of debate and even fear.

4. Doom 2: Romero’s Head
This Easter Egg is seen as comical by some, and downright gross by others. The Doom series first began in the early 90’s and includes related novels, comics, board game, and film adaptations. In Doom 2, MAP30: Icon of Sin, the easter egg is planted as a final boss. Usually what is known as “The Icon of Sin” must be hit with a rocket and damaged significantly to finish the level.
In this case, the Icon is an image of John Romero’s head. Romero is a designer and programmer for the game. The only way to see it is to use the idclip cheat code and go behind the face of the final boss. Additionally, it’s not just an image of his head. It is clearly severed, dripping blood and placed upon a spike and features some disturbing audio of Romero’s voice in reverse.

3. Batman: Arkham Knight
When it comes to Batman, be it comics, animated series, movies or video games, the Joker provides creators with a perfect place to make things absolutely horrifying. One of the scariest scenes to feature the Joker comes from Batman: Arkham Knight. The game begins after the Joker has died and his body is being prepared for cremation. An already unsightly scene gets even better (or worse) as the game prompts the player to start the incinerator.

As flames engulf the joker he begins to scream in pain. Shortly after he jumps forward to expose crispy skin and his signature laugh. Prompting the player to interact truly brings them into the game and then serves a classic and detailed jumpscare that remains popular.

2. Undertale: Gaster
Undertale is a role-playing indie game released in 2015 that immediately grew a massive fan base. Created entirely by game developer Toby Fox, the detailed game takes the player on a creative, emotional, and often terrifying journey. This game is basically known for it’s lore, hidden details, alternate endings, changing levels and easter eggs. Gaster is a character discussed in the game that is almost an Easter Egg of his own, because while his existence is confirmed he is never seen and some factors of the game hint his is still alive.

Two of the most popular Gaster related Easter Eggs are known as “Gasters Theme” and “The Encounter”. Undertale has a hidden value in it's code called the 'fun value'. This value ranges from 1 to 100 and is set randomly by the game upon startup. This number determines certain events in the game. If the value is set at 65 while you're in the Snowdin level, you can access a new area which allows you to play “test” versions of songs from the game.

One of these songs is called 'Gaster's Theme'. Once you play it, it continues for the remainder of your presence here and you cannot change it. Of course this is an obvious reference to Gaster and the fact that the player loses control of the game here implies that Gaster has some power over the code of the game. Speaking of the code of the game, another popular aspect of Undertale is the players ability to alter the game by editing the code or save files.

One feature allows you to edit the save file and set the room you spawn into as room 264. When you arrive in room 264, a message is shared in the Wingdings font, which is known exclusively as Gaster’s font. Additionally, some disturbing music and audio is played over the message. When translated the message reads; “Entry 17: Dark, darker, yet darker. The darkness keeps growing. The shadow is cutting deeper. Photon readings negative.

1.Star Fox: Out of this Dimension
The Star Fox series is a classic, with it’s first release in 1993. In the game while flying through open space and shooting at asteroids, a very peculiar looking asteroid will cross your path. If you successfully shoot this, the game appears to glitch in a very trippy way and you are taken to what can only be described as another dimension. Coincidentally this location is known as “Out of this Dimension”.

While here, things move in a strange and fluid manner, the asteroids have faces on them, and the sound is distorted. The mysterious location is known to be infinite, though no other facts are clear. It is apparently outside of the games universe and “outside of existence as we know it”. Players have described the level as inescapable and many deem it the alternate ending of the game.
The dimension does not appear in any other Star Fox games, though it is similar to the later introduced “Warp Zones”. Aside from the general confusing vibe of the location, it is said to be unsettling because it focuses on the unknown and dangerous expanse of space and even reality.

10 MOST VENOMOUS SNAKES ON EARTH
From the lethal bites of Australian serpents to the fatal sting of the India's National Reptile, today we look at the Most Venomous Snakes On Earth.

10. Belcher's Sea Snake

Unlike some of the highly aggressive entries featured on this list, Belcher's Sea Snake, or the faint-banded sea snake as it's also called, is much more docile. A mistake in a 1996 first edition of a Smithsonian guide to snakes started the rumor that this was actually the most poisonous snake in the world. In reality, it's venom is much less dangerous than ones belonging to the majority of snakes on this list, and even then it will refrain from injecting venom in most of its bites.

Venom is measured by the amount of toxin required to prove lethal for half of a sample group of animals. This is called an LD50 test. This is a relatively crude, barbaric experiment for testing venom lethality, as well as rife with outstanding variables such as how the toxin is administered with varieties ranging from muscle to vein to fat injections, or even forced inhalation or feeding. But despite this, it remains the main route by which the world measures the deadliness of venom. The true danger of the snake's venom is uncertain as data surrounding its LD50 results are scarce and difficult to compare to other venoms, while rumors continue to run rampant regarding its danger. Many online sources still frame the Belcher's sea snake as the deadliest, but in reality, it has nowhere near the most lethal of snakebites in the world.

9. Green Mamba

Not quite as nasty as it's notorious onyx-colored cousin, the brilliant Green Mamba is still quite dangerous. Armed with a mix of neurotoxins and cardiotoxins , the green mamba's bite targets the body's organ functions, first causing disorientation through dizziness and nausea before graduating to a swollen throat, a shift in heartbeat patterns, and eventually convulsions and respiratory paralysis.

Fatal results aren't always guaranteed once bitten, however untreated bites are thought to have a high mortality rate. Thankfully, the afflicted area bit by a green mamba tends to swell, making the danger associated with its venom a bit easier to identify and hopefully allow for the application of an antidote. Still, this species has very long front fangs that the snake actually has some control over, making more severe envenoming strikes a likely occurrence. In this case, more often than not the effects set in rapidly, and the bitten victim may perish in as little time as 30 minutes.

8. Boomslang

Hanging from the trees of Sub-Saharan Africa is a green and black serpent with a subtle yet treacherous bite. Known as the Boomslang, this species of snake is the only one of its family to prove harmful to humans. Normally found to have a set of inept fangs and a compact venom gland, the boomslang is the outlier among the Colubridae family with massive syringe-like injectors that protrude from the back of its mouth. The venom it produces takes time to process, but the symptoms are severe and can consist of headaches, sleepiness, and even mental disorders.

Mostly a hemotoxin , the boomslang's volatile injection can also stall the coagulation of wounds, leading to a lethal end by external or internal bleeding. It can also cause hemorrhaging of the brain and other muscles.  Due to the hours it takes for the symptoms to set in, victims are often lulled into a false sense of safety, thinking it to be a venomless strike called a dry bite. As a result, those struck by a boomslang's venom sometimes fail to receive the antivenom they need in time. Luckily for the public, though, this snake remains relatively tepid, not too territorial, and will only strike if handled or threatened directly.

7. Gwardar

Often referred to as the western brown snake, the Australian colloquially named Gwardar was christened as such after the Aboriginal advice given to those who would run into such a snake, translating to: "go the long way around." While it may be typically shy, this would still serve as great advice given this snake's penchant for speed. Quick to take the defensive, and even quicker to strike, this highly alert species doesn't need much to get nervous. The gwardar comes in a small variety of looks, but will on average grow close to six feet in length.

Its scales feature an orange-brown hue and the head will either feature a small black V shape on the back or be covered entirely by a coat of black scales. Found all across the continent of Australia, these deadly reptiles are found in forests, grasslands, and urban areas alike. It doesn't have the most deadly venom around, but the gwardar delivers it in high doses through its tiny fangs. This can turn fatal as bleeding complications, abdominal pain, and even kidney damage will occur with severity dependant on the amount of venom injected. But instead of risking it and hoping for a low dosage, next time you're in the outback, just follow the advice and gwardar !

6. Rattlesnake

Infamous for its namesake noisy appendage, the Rattlesnake is actually a type of pit viper, and a highly venomous one at that. Populating forests and deserts from Alberta down to Argentina, all 36 species of the rattlesnake are endemic to the Americas. Unlike other snakes who may take time and maturity to develop their complex venoms, adolescents of this species are born with functioning fangs and venom able to execute at birth.

The venom, like others, results in decaying tissue and blood clotting impediments. But some species of rattlesnake have even been known to cause paralysis with their penetrating strike. Rattlesnake venom is very complex in general, usually containing a mixture of up to 15  different enzymes. The toxins contain immobilizing and digestive components as well, making sure to not only injure their prey but also to slow down and tenderize it as well. But even with all their neat tricks, many species of rattlesnake are endangered today as a majority of their native habitat has been invaded for the past century by what may be their greatest threat: the automobile.

5. Black Mamba

This snake is considered to be the most dangerous and fear-inducing snake in Africa. But their seclusion and timidness keep Black Mamba snakebite rates low, luckily for the public. These snakes are often identified by their coffin-esque heads and long slender bodies which average at around 8 feet in length and max out at almost 15 feet! One feature you can't rely on to recognize a black mamba, though, is its color. Somewhat of a misnomer, black mamba's are rarely black, often appearing in olive, brown, khaki or grey shades. Adolescents can be found wearing lighter hues of these colors with adults darkening as they age.

If you can't spot a black mamba from its look, though, hope you never have to try to identify by its venom. Before the advent of antivenom for this species, its bite was 100% lethal. Without treatment, its victims will typically pass within seven to fifteen hours of being bitten, and some reports as recent as 2008 tell of victims having a heart attack within one hour of envenomation. Those struck by a black mamba's bite will experience abnormal skin sensations like pins pricking them or a limb falling asleep. They'll then often begin to lose motor functions until an erratic heart rate will set in, often leading to cardiac or respiratory failure.

4. Tiger Snake

Usually sporting a thick, blunt head and even thicker, yellowish-striped body, the Tiger Snake of Australia also has numerous variations in physical appearance depending on its inhabited region. Tasmanian tiger snakes, for example, are typically dark brown or black with faint banding stripes. Meanwhile the Western tiger snake is a much deeper black with bright yellow bands and a yellow stomach.

But no matter the look, these snakes at least share one thing in common: their terrifying venom. The mortality rate of untreated tiger snake bites is about 40 to 60 percent, though given their common occurrence in Australia, fatalities are few and far between. This wasn't always the case, but since the introduction of a specific Tasmanian antivenom used to treat all Tasmanian snakebites, tiger snake casualties have lessened considerably in the 21st century.

3. King Cobra

As the longest venomous snake at a maximum length of more than 19 feet, armed with a grizzled, growling hiss and its iconic hood, the King Cobra is truly majestic. And in proper fashion, its venomous bite is a royal pain in the keister . Sometimes only taking a matter of 30 minutes to set in, the symptoms induced from the venom of India's national reptile can send a victim from feeling a bit tired and dizzy to paralysis and into a coma in no time. Some antivenoms exist, but they are luckily rarely needed as very few envenomed snakebites occur with this breed. In fact, king cobras are mainly interested in eating other snakes like rat snakes, pythons and pit vipers. Still, snake charmers are commonly found throughout India and they make up a good portion of all reported king cobra bites.

2. Saw-Scaled Viper

While relatively small in size, this snake is at the top of the big four of India and one of the deadliest in the world, contributing to more snakebite mortalities than any other serpent. Found often in populated areas, the Saw-Scaled Viper crawls low and deliberate with acute alertness, giving inspiration to its other name: the carpet viper. These creatures sidewind to make there way around, keeping part of their body ever still in case of a potential predator...or prey.

At a maximum of length of just under three feet and brown, gray, or olive patterned skin flecked with white, the saw-scaled viper lurks unseen near cities throughout Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East. Another unique trait of this species comes from one of its primary defense mechanisms. Living up to its namesake, these vipers will grind their scales together like a rigid saw when threatened, creating a coarse, foreboding warning sound towards the aggressors.

Though they still won't give you time to react as they prove notoriously easy to agitate. Victims that suffer a bite from the saw-scaled viper experience profuse bleeding as chemicals in the venom block blood from clotting. These bites can result in permanent damage or loss of an organ, necrosis, extreme pain and swelling, and even a cerebral hemorrhage , making this tiny snake's bite as violent as it is lethal.

1. Inland Taipan

Commonly called the fierce snake, this Australian native is definitively the most venomous snake in the world. Based on venom measurements, it only requires two and a half hundredths of a milligram per kilogram of the target's weight to cause ones demise, and in some tests only one hundredth of a milligram was needed. That means an average 75 kilogram, or about 165 pound, person would only require, at most, about a 1.875 milligrams of venom to meet their end. To make matters even more frightening, the Inland Taipan can administer an average of 44 milligrams per bite, and has a maximum recorded dose of 110 milligrams!

A case of Pok? Haram
While some churches have welcomed Pikachu and gang, the world’s religious extremists are calling for ‘Satanic’ Pok?mon to Go Away

Nintendo’s hit new augmented-reality smartphone game Pok?mon Go, in which players hunt the titular virtual monsters in real-world locations around them, has been making endless silly-season headlines in the West since its release in July, but elsewhere the reaction has been a little more vociferous. As might be expected, Pikachu & Co have yet again been condemned from the mosques of the Middle East in the name of Islam – or that element of Islam which considers Pok?mon to be worthy of serious religious comment – with Saudi scholars reiterating their 2001 fatwa against the vile djinn in all their guises, whether on GameBoy, DS, N64, GameCube or iPhone. Among other things, clerics have accused Nintendo’s beloved characters of “possessing the minds” of vulnerable youths (unlike hate preachers, obviously), encouraging gambling, being in league with “international Zionism” and promoting Freemasonry and polytheism.

As the Pok?mon evolve into new forms once they gain enough experience-points in battle, the game is even seen by some hardline clerics as fostering belief in Darwinism – which, as it is not mentioned in the Koran, is defnitely Pok? Haram. (Some American Bible-bashers have damned the game on similar grounds).

Such things have been reported on in FT before, during past bouts of Pok?-mania, where you can learn that, rather than being a simple contraction of the phrase ‘Pocket Monsters’, ‘Pok?mon’ actually means “I am a Jew” in Syriac. New to the pastime of condemning the Pok?mon as agents of evil, however, is the Russian Orthodox Church, with that organisation’s spokesman Vakhtang Kipshidze declaring the latest smartphone version of the game to be “a threat to human integrity”, and warning foolish youths against playing it in church. Apparently, doing so could lead to a three-year prison sentence; plenty of time for convicts to catch ‘em all there. Franz Klintsevich, of Russia’s Defence and Security Committee, went even further.

“There is a feeling that the Devil came through this mechanism and is simply trying to destroy us spiritually from within,” he said. Irreligious Pok?players outside of Russia are able to escape Patriarch Kirill’s reach, however, much to the chagrin of priests at the Russian Orthodox St Nicholas Cathedral in the Austrian capital of Vienna, where during August a mysterious “Devil-Pok?mon” called ‘Raa666’ appeared, leading to Nintendo receiving an official complaint. The strange thing is that there is no Pok?mon named ‘Raa666’; the roster has expanded exponentially since the 151 creatures of the initial Pok?mon Red/Blue GameBoy titles released outside of Japan in 1998, but Pok?mon No 666 is a wholly inoffensive butterflybeast named Vivillon. Perhaps a sacrilegious hacker is playing a prank on Cathedral authorities.

Back in Blighty, the religious and political response to Pok?mania has been more benign, with even Jeremy Corbyn having a go on the thing. Meanwhile, the Church of England taught a lesson of Christ-like tolerance to their Orthodox cousins by effectively encouraging people to catch Pok?mon in their churches. Signs saying things like ‘JESUS CARES ABOUT POK?MON GAMERS’ started appearing, and vicars were allowed to set their churches up as public Pok?Stops (locations where large numbers of Pok?mon can be caught and exchanged by players), to encourage tots and teens to come inside and complete their collections… and then talk about Jesus.

Trendy vicars have tried such tricks before; during a previous bout of Pok?-mania in 2000, a Kent-based theology student named David Tate invented a rival to the Pok?mon Battle- Cards, then all the rage, in the shape of an alternative, more religious card-game called ‘Christian Power Cards’. Here, Biblical figures like David and Goliath could face off against one another Top Trumps-style, each having different skill-rankings in a number of categories, to see which one would win. There were 120 religious figures to collect, but, surprisingly, not Jesus, as “it would defeat the purpose if [He] was beaten by one of the bad characters”, said Tate. At the time the story made the news in June 2000, Tate had sold around 150 packets of cards – rather fewer than Nintendo had done with Pikachu et al; surely the best solution would have been a more commerciallyviable compromise in which the pixellated beasts faced off against famous Christian figures. Moses v Meowth, St George vs Charizard or Jonah vs a highlyevolved Level-30 whale-type Pok?mon would have been battles any sane child would have paid good money to see.

10 MCDONALD'S FRIED SECRETS THAT YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN
No McDonald’s meal is complete without an order of their famous fries. It’s no wonder then that fries are the best sellers on their menu. Those delicious fried potato sticks hold many secrets, both pleasantly surprising and downright shocking. It’s time to look at 10 McDonald’s fries secrets that you would have never known!

1. McDonald’s Fries are more than they appear!
It would be quite natural to assume that the ingredients to make fries would be very simple, probably just potatoes, oil, and salt. But that’s not the case with the world-famous McDonald’s fries. What gives them their unique taste (and shelf life) is a whole load of other ingredients, a grand total of 19! Along with potatoes and hydrogenated soybean oil, there’s a plethora of additives; from simple ones like dextrose and citric acid to complicated compounds like  dimethylpolysiloxane, and TBHQ (tertiary butylhydroquinone) that are used to impart a better taste, speed up the cooking time, or preserve and extend the shelf life of the fries. And some of the ingredients are listed twice because they’re used at two different stages of the cooking process.

2. Who knew making fries was so complicated!
But what is puzzling is the unnecessary use of these added ingredients by McDonald’s outlets in some countries while completely leaving them out in others. For example, McDonald’s outlets in the UK, Australia, Israel, India, etc. use fewer ingredients and additives to make the same fries as in the U.S. outlets. But that does not mean that the fries at McDonald’s are full of chemicals, acids and fats that are bad for you. You can rest assured that all the ingredients that go into making the fries at McDonald’s are approved by the U.S. FDA (the Food & Drug Administration). And moreover, the quantities of these additives used in the fries are well within the limits that are safe for human consumption. So, you need not fret over having a delicious helping of your favorite fries – probably.

3. McDonald’s fries are made from real potatoes
Adding to the shroud of mystery surrounding McDonald’s fries is the rumor that they are not made from real potatoes, but some sort of fake potato substitute. Well, that’s not true at all. McDonald’s fries are made from real potatoes that are sourced from a wide variety of regions across the U.S. It is also said that the fries sold in Canadian McDonald’s outlets are made from locally sourced Canadian potato varieties. While potatoes come in different shapes and sizes, the team at McDonald’s is very selective in choosing the right type of potatoes for their fries. They have carefully selected those varieties of potatoes that are well known for creating the signature ‘crispy on the outside, soft on the inside’ fry. The most common varieties used in making McDonald’s fries are the different types of Russet potatoes – Russet Ranger, Russet Burbank, etc. Also worth noting is the fact that McDonald’s uses non-GMO potatoes for making their fries.

4. McDonald’s fries are actually cut with a knife
Contrary to popular belief, McDonald’s fries do not have any ridiculous-sounding secret manufacturing process where potato pulp or mush is carefully shaped into uniformly sized fries! McDonald’s fries are made from real potatoes that are cut with a knife - albeit a high-precision electronic one! Rest assured, there is no potato goop involved here. As per some reports, the process of creating the perfect fries at McDonald’s starts with the unloading of potatoes on a conveyor belt. The potatoes are then thoroughly rinsed, peeled, washed and passed into a tube with high-pressure water in it. They are then shot into another tube (at about 60 miles an hour) where a succession of razor-sharp blades cuts the potatoes into fries of precise length and width. Overall, there is admittedly a high-tech process involved in slicing the potatoes into fries, but that just adds to the hygiene value of the fries. Since there is no human involvement in the slicing of potatoes, you can be almost certain that there is no danger of any sort of contamination.

5. That special flavor that makes McDonald’s fries so tasty!
Ever wondered what makes the fries at McDonald’s taste so yummy and different from fries at other fast-food outlets? Let’s just say that there’s a secret ingredient for that too! It’s their ‘natural beef flavor’ that imparts the famous ‘McDonald’s fries taste’ to the fries. But why would McDonald’s add beef to their fries? There’s a story behind that. Way back in the 1950s, when the oil hydrogenation process (conversion of liquid vegetable oils to semi-solid fats to bring about a change in their physical properties like melting point, etc.) was difficult and expensive, the McDonald’s oil supplier was in quite a jam.

So, they supplied McDonald’s with a concoction of beef fat and oil. Fast forward to the 1980s, the oil supplier removed the beef fat from the oil that was loaded with saturated fats, but McDonald’s wanted to retain the ‘beefy flavor’ that their customers were accustomed to by now. So, they added in a ‘natural beef flavor’ instead. It has been debated quite often if the fries at McDonald’s are really suitable for vegetarians and vegans. In fact, the company was even sued by Hindu and Buddhist groups in 2001 for trying to pass off their fries as a ‘vegetarian-friendly’ option on McDonald’s menus. To avoid offending customers with cultural or religious restrictions, the fries sold in Indian outlets of McDonald’s completely bypasses the use of any beef flavor and just use potatoes, vegetarian palmolein oil, salt and a tiny bit of dextrose.

6. You can always ask for ‘fresh fries’
Did you know that you could ask for ‘fresh fries’ at any McDonald’s outlet? Everyone loves hot crispy fries that are well salted and straight out of the fryer. Most often, it’s the delicious fries that draw most people to McDonald’s. Getting a whiff of the long golden sticks of deliciousness as soon as you open your meal bag, sinking your teeth into the crunchy exterior and biting into the fluffy interior is what comes to mind when you think of McDonald’s fries. And if there were even a slight deviation from this, it would be a terrible disappointment for most. But since McDonald’s is a ‘fast-food’ restaurant, making everything from scratch, including fries, would not be a quick or cost-effective process.

As a result, occasionally, you end up receiving fries that have been sitting out for some time, probably under the warming lamp. But there’s a secret hack to ensuring that you always get the best fries at McDonald’s – a secret code word. The key to ensuring that your fries are always crispy is asking for ‘fresh fries’ when you place your order at the counter. It’s as simple as that!

7. McDonald’s fries come pre-frozen and are re-fried before being served to you
Believe it or not, there is an actual assembly-line production process involved in creating the perfect McDonald’s fries! As mentioned earlier, the process involves the unloading, peeling and washing of potatoes before they are fed into a high-pressure water tube to be sliced into precise fry shapes. As soon as they are out of the slicing tube, the fries are liberally sprinkled with dextrose and other additives to give them all a uniform color, and prevent them from eveloping a gray tinge. Then, they are partially fried and some more additives including the ‘natural beef flavor’ are added to the fries. The partially fried fries are then flash frozen to lock in everything. These frozen fries are neatly packaged and shipped to McDonald’s outlets all across the country.

At each McDonald’s outlet, the fries are fried again and salt is added before being served to customers in paper containers. The refrying process (and the additives) is what gives McDonald’s fries their signature crispy outer layer all the while retaining the soft mashed potato interior of the fries. With such an intricate process required to make the fries, it is no wonder that the fries are partially cooked in a factory setup, and merely re-fried and salted at the actual outlets. This partial frying, flash freezing and refrying process is what enables McDonald’s employees to serve up your fries order so quickly. So the next time you order a portion of fries, think about all the processes that went into bringing you the perfect portion of fries.

8. These fries are not for the weight-watchers!
The calorie-count of fries at most McDonald’s outlets is seriously high. On an average, a medium portion of McDonald’s fries has about 340 calories, 44 grams of carbohydrates and 16 grams of fat. Yes, you heard that right, 340 calories for just a side portion of fries! And if you’re like most people, a medium portion of fries is not the only item that you would order. Add a burger, soda or milkshake to the meal combination and you’re left with a dangerously high calorific meal. What makes McDonald’s fries so high in calories? To begin with, it is a well-known fact that potatoes are high in carbohydrates and generally not advisable for those on a weight-loss diet.

Add to that the trans fats present in the hydrogenated soybean oil that is used to fry the fries, and the fact that the fries are fried twice, once at the factory and a second time at the outlet, adds enormously to the total calorie count of the fries. Responding to customer demands and legislation, McDonald’s outlets in most European countries use non-hydrogenated oils during the cooking process of the fries. Thus, the fries served at McDonald’s outlets in these countries are free of any trans fats and low in calories.

The calorie-count of McDonald’s fries does not seem to affect the popularity of this menu item at all. To most customers, a burger meal without fries is simply incomplete. While McDonald’s fries are obviously not suitable for those watching their weight, it would be quite okay to consume the fries in moderation or even consider it as an indulgence and have them once in a while. After all, that’s what a ‘cheat day’ in your diet plan is for! Ask for salt-free fries at Mickey D’s Just like there is an option of asking for ‘fresh fries’ at McDonald’s outlets, you also have the option of asking for ‘fries without salt’. Who knew! While the option of asking for ‘fries without salt’ definitely qualifies as a hidden McDonald’s secret, it most definitely does not make the employees’ lives any easier.

When you ask for ‘fries without salt’, a fresh batch of fries has to be made especially for you since the ready-to-go fries that are served to everyone else are already salted. The employee in-charge of preparing the fries has to wipe down the fries scoop and the fries counter, to prevent cross-contamination with the salted fries, before preparing a fresh batch of fries just for you. And you also run the risk of getting fewer than usual fries in your order when you order ‘fries without salt’. If any fries fall out of the container, the employee will not be able to replace them simply because all the other fries would probably be already salted. But overall, it’s quite nice to know that you have an option of ordering salt-free fries should you desire them.

9. More than just ketchup to use as dipping sauce
While most fast-food restaurants offer just the usual ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise dipping sauces, McDonald’s has a plethora of options that you can pick from. While most McDonald’s outlets in the U.S. offer specialty dipping sauces only with their McNuggets, there’s nothing stopping you from asking for those same sauces for your fries as well. All you have to do is ask, and the employees will most likely provide you with the sauce of your choice with a smile on their face.

And if you’re wondering what these specialty dipping sauces are, well, there are the usual suspects – ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. But there are also combination sauces like ketchup + mayo or a DIY mayo-chup. You could even try your fries with barbecue sauce, creamy ranch, honey mustard, tangy BBQ, chipotle BBQ, sweet and sour, spicy buffalo, sweet chili or even McDonald’s Signature sauce. With such a delicious variety of sauces, you have absolutely no reason to shy away from ordering that large portion of McDonald’s fries and enjoying them with a couple of your favorite dipping sauces at hand!

10. There’s a reason why they always look the same
If you’ve always suspected that the fries at McDonald’s always look the same or look exactly ‘as shown on TV’, then you’re right – they do always look the same! And according to the people at McDonald's, the secret to this uniformity in appearance is the dextrose that is added to the fries right after they are cut into the quintessential fry shapes. Dextrose is a form of sugar, when added to the fries, gives them a unique golden color that we associate with McDonald’s fries. In short, dextrose is a kind of coloring agent that ensures that the fries have the same color and appearance, irrespective of the season or time of the year.

Since the potatoes are partially cooked at a factory, all the natural sugars in the potatoes are lost and it becomes necessary to introduce another form of sugar to counter-balance the loss. Dextrose is used in the production process of fries in almost all the outlets of McDonald’s all over the world. Now that you know why McDonald’s fries always look the same, go on and have a nice big portion of those yummy fries! Order up more by staying right here. Just tap on our next great video. FRENCH FRIES
THE HISTORY OF FRENCH FRIES
Don't let the name fool you. French fries might not be exactly French. Who doesn't love a good side of french fries? But forget everything you know about today's fries. The originals were more like fried potato chunks. Think home fries meet steak fries. And the origins of fries are still highly contested. There's still serious drama between Belgium and France over who can claim the frite as their own. But before we get into the birth of fries, we can't forget the actual star of the show: potatoes. Potatoes are an ancient crop first cultivated in Peru around 8,000 to 5,000 BC. It wasn't until the 1500s when some Spanish conquistadors discovered the greatness of potatoes and brought it back with them to Spain. You know, just like how Christopher Columbus discovered America.

Once the potatoes landed in Spain, the vegetable eventually spread across Europe just waiting to be sliced, deep-fried, and devoured at 2:00 a.m. Now, here's where the fried debacle ignited. On one side, many people claim french fries originated in Belgium. Back in the 1700s, villagers along the River Meuse would usually eat small fried fish. But when the winter got super cold and froze the river, they would turn to potatoes instead, slicing them up and frying them instead of fish. When World War I was going on, American soldiers who were in Belgium stumbled upon the fried potatoes, but because people in southern Belgium speak French, the American soldiers called them french fries. Way to complicate things! On the other side, we have France. Many people from France claim french fries really are French.

Some say they were created by street vendors on the oldest bridge in Paris, the Pont Neuf in 1789. But how did they go from a European street treat to an American fast-food obsession? Oddly enough, Thomas Jefferson might be responsible for introducing french fries to the U.S. Jefferson first encountered fries when he served as American Minister in France from 1784 to 1789. That's when he fell in love with the potatoes.

During his time there, he collected about 150 recipes, and among these recipes, it includes one for *clears throat* which translates to potatoes deep fried while raw in small cuttings. He would serve his White House guests this fried potatoes recipe from France, thus french fries. For some reason fries didn't really catch on with the public until the 1900s. Soldiers who came back from World War I would ask for the fries that they had in northern France and Belgium. The fries then really took off stateside. People started pairing them with hamburgers, and burgers and fries became a thing. Fast-food chains like McDonald's and Burger King helped make the combo popular and suddenly Burgers and Fries sort of became America's thing.

Nowadays, french fries are a beloved food all over the world in tons of different varieties, like shoestring, curly, waffle, crinkle, wedges, cheese fries, chili fries, or poutine. With endless condiments on the side, like ketchup, mayo, or both. And since we can't truly confirm whether we owe fries to Belgium or France, we salute them both for inventing the perfect side dish. or main depending on who you're asking. A bag of crispy, fresh McDonald's french fries. Golden brown. Very tasty!

THE UNTOLD TRUTH OF MCDONALD'S FRIES
McDonald's french fries are arguably the best fast food item ever invented. With their perfectly crisp exterior and distinct addictive flavor, it's hard to come up with a superior menu choice. But even lifelong admirers of McDonald's fries might not know everything there is to know about the iconic fast food side. Here are a few little-known facts about McDonald's fries.

Here's the beef
Vegans and vegetarians might assume that deep fried potatoes are a safe pick, but if you're noshing at a McDonald's in the states, that's not the case. According to the McDonald's website, stateside, their famous fries contain "natural beef flavor" as well as "hydrolyzed milk." In India and other countries where abstaining from animal products for religious reasons is a widespread practice, McDonald's keeps them out of the fries, according to ABC News. Not counting the obvious potatoes, a whopping 11 additional ingredients go into making the U.S. incarnation of the most addictive side of all time. In 2015, McDonald's hired electrical engineer and former Mythbuster Grant Imahara to break them all down. It's hardly an unbiased examination, but Imahara insists you haven't been enjoying a, quote, "Franken-fry composed of chemicals." For what it's worth, Imahara says the "scariest" sounding ingredient of the bunch, dimethylpolysiloxane, is actually just an FDA-approved anti-foaming agent which keeps frying oil from splattering and frothing.

Where's the beef fat?
It's not your imagination, while McDonald's fries are still downright delicious, they do taste different than they did years ago. So what changed, exactly? "...crispy french fries, as only McDonald's makes them …" Prior to the early 1990s, they were actually cooked in beef tallow, AKA beef fat. The move to vegetable oil was made when consumers began to express concerns over the amount of saturated fat in the fries. National Heart Savers Association founder and construction industry millionaire Phil Sokolof spent millions of dollars in the '80s campaigning against the saturated fat content found in fast food from McDonald's and other chains. Eventually, McDonald's caved to the pressure and stopped cooking their fries in beef fat, but at the cost of some serious flavor.

French fried baloney
As with most world-famous foodstuff, there are a number of totally bogus claims circulating online about McDonald's french fries. The Bump reports that an alarming number of people on the world wide web think that eating salty Mickey D's fries, quote, "helps with fertilization because it prompts your body to soak up extra fluids." Needless to say, there is no actual scientific evidence out there to back this claim up. In February 2018, a study on hair follicle growth touted dimethylpolysiloxane as a potential cure for baldness, so a number of imaginative folks online decided that McDonald's fries must be a cure for baldness. Steve Harvey is right: The stuff is only used as a base to cultivate hair follicles, and it is definitely not an ingredient in a "recipe" for a cure. According to a report by the Japan Times, the scientist who led the study addressed and debunked the myth, saying, "I have seen online comments asking, 'How many fries would I have to eat to grow my hair?' I'd feel bad if people think eating something would do that!"

Healthy-ish
If you're looking for health food, you're probably not hitting the drive-thru. But if you are hitting the drive-thru, you might want to know which fast food joint offers the "healthiest" french fries. Turns out, the Golden Arches are near the top of the list when it comes to having the lowest calories and the least amount of bad fats. In 2009, WebMD ranked french fries from 14 popular fast food chains, including McDonald's, to see how they rated nutritionally. McDonald's came in second for lowest calories, just below Sonic Drive-In. Similarly, Mickey D's placed second for lowest fat, saturated fat, and trans fat. More good news for McDonald's fans: According to their website, Sonic's french fries now contain more calories and fat than they did back in '09, meaning the Golden Arches are likely the "healthiest" fast food fries in the game, relatively speaking.

WHY MILLENNIALS CHOOSE TO BUY HOME

According to NerdWallet's Millennials & Homebuying Study, the top 5 reasons young renters choose to own are:

1. To Have Control over Their Living Space - 93%
Many Millennials who rent a home or apartment prior to buying their own homes, dream of the day that they will be able to paint the walls whatever color they'd like, or renovate an outdated part of their living space. Many others who have waited to add a pet to their families daydream about the day that they'll be able to go pick out their 'furever'friend. Owning your own home gives you the freedom to make those choices.

2. To Have a sense of Privacy & Security - 90%
It is no surprise that having a place to call home, with all that means, in comfort and security, is the #2 reason. As a homeowner, you have control over who has access to your home, and you are able to secure it how you see fit.

3. To Live in a Nicer Home - 81%
Similar to the #1 reason, when you purchase a home, you can choose to live in a nicer home or choose to renovate a home & restore its glory. Owning also allows you to accommodate your growing family or a family member who may need to move in.

4. To Feel Engaged in Their Community - 75%
Owning a home in a community is one of the major reasons why residents become more civically involved. The stakes are raised once your home value is directly tied to the neighborhood and community in which you live.

5. To Have Flexibility in Future Decisions - 53%
Owning a home allows you to use your monthly housing cost as a savings account that can be borrowed against in the future. Having this option available during uncertain times is just one of many reasons why homeowners feel more secure in their homes.

"The majority of millennials said they consider owning a home more sensible than renting for both financial and lifestyle reasons - including control of living space, flexibility in future decisions, privacy and security, and living in a nice home."

5 MYSTERIOUS PEOPLE WHO HAVE FINALLY BEEN IDENTIFIED

1. David Lytton
On December 11, 2015, this unidentified man was filmed by CCTV leaving the Manchester Piccadilly railway station in England. A day later, his body was discovered near the "Indian's Head" rock feature overlooking a remote reservoir in Saddleworth Moor. The man had no identification, and other than his train tickets, he was carrying nothing besides an empty vial of Strychnine.

It was believed that he swallowed the poison to commit suicide and likely had some tie to the location where he was found. When reports of the mysterious man’s death were made public, many speculated that he was involved in a 1949 plane crash......in which a British European Airways Douglas DC-3 impacted Indian’s Head in a fog, killing 24 and leaving 8 survivors. That potential lead, however, turned up no clues, and other attempts to link him to missing persons and suspected spies failed.
The case went cold for a year until police focused on Urdu writing found on the vial and a metal plate in the man’s leg. Both items likely came from Pakistan, and the investigation turned to combing through flights that had arrived from the country. By comparing passport photos to the deceased man, police were finally able to identify him as David Lytton in early 2017.

Lytton, formerly known as David Lautenberg, was a 67-year-old man from London who had been retired in Pakistan for 10 years. Despite his identification, the reasons for which Lytton traveled to Saddleworth Moor to end his life remain a mystery.

2. Benjaman Kyle
Early on August 31, 2004, employees at a Richmond Hill, Georgia, Burger King found an unconscious man behind the dumpster. He was naked and sunburned and depressions in his skull appeared to indicate that he had suffered severe blunt force trauma. The man possessed no photo identity documents, and police recorded his name at the hospital as “Burger King Doe.”

When he finally woke up two weeks later, he had no memory of his past, other than that he believed his first name was “Benjaman.” Further adding to the mystery, the man had been suffering from advanced cataracts that rendered him partially blind......and following surgery to restore his eyesight, he realized that he was nearly 20 years older than he previously thought. Listed as the only missing person the FBI knew where to find, Benjaman took the surname Kyle and referred to himself as BK.

Despite appearing on TV, featuring in a documentary, and taking part in a Reddit AMA, he remained unidentified for a decade. It wouldn’t be until 2015 that a genetic detective would discover that BK’s real name was William Burgess Powell......a man born in Indiana who disappeared from his family in 1976 after abandoning his car and leaving all of his belongings behind. A paper-trail of odd jobs traced Powell to Boulder and Denver, Colorado, but records of his existence dry up after 1983. It is still not known what Powell was doing in the years before he was found or how he later ended up behind the Burger King...

3. Lori Ruff
On December 24, 2010, the body of Lori Erica Ruff was found in her car parked in the driveway of the Ruff family’s Texas home. She had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and left behind a note for her husband and a sealed letter for her daughter. The Ruff family had always had reservations about Lori, who behaved erratically and refused to speak about her history. That her suicide note contained only "ramblings from a clearly disturbed person" did little to assuage their doubts.

After her funeral, the Ruffs found a box hidden in her closet that suggested “Lori” had been living under a stolen identity......basing her life on the birth certificate of a 2-year-old girl killed in a Washington state house fire in 1988. It is believed that Lori moved to Idaho and used the document to legally change her name and start her mysterious new life.

Scribblings in the box included "North Hollywood police", "402 months", and "Ben Perkins," but offered no clue to her past. Lori’s story generated intense public speculation that she was running away from a crime or had escaped a religious cult. Her true origins remained a mystery until 2016, when she was identified using forensic DNA genealogy as Kimberly McLean. McLean ran away from home in 1986 when she was 18 to escape a turbulent family, but it is unclear why she needed a new identity. Where she was and what she was doing between her disappearance and arrival in Texas in 1988 remain almost entirely unknown...

4. Pual Fronczak
On April 27, 1964, one-day-old Paul Fronczak was stolen from his parents and snuck out of a Chicago hospital by an unknown woman. His whereabouts were a mystery until the shock discovery of a toddler of a similar appearance a year later in New Jersey. Although the identity of the abandoned child could not be established scientifically, the Fronczaks were convinced he was Paul.
The FBI returned the child to the family, and he was raised as their own until he failed to resemble the Fronczaks as he grew. It eventually became apparent to the Fronczaks that “Paul” was an entirely different and unidentified child......a suspicion that was eventually confirmed by DNA testing in 2012, opening a second and entirely new mystery.

It took several years for Paul to finally be identified as Jack, a child who had vanished along with his twin sister Jill. Jack’s biological parents had since died, leaving them unable to shed any light on his early history or why he was abandoned. Even stranger, it is still not known why Jack was left alone in his stroller while no trace of Jill was ever found. As for the real Paul Fronczak, his FBI case has since been reopened and he is once again a missing person...

5. Bella
On April 18, 1943, four local boys in Hagley Wood, England discovered an unusual wych elm tree with a hollow trunk......and after climbing the tree to peer down into the void, they spotted what appeared to be a human skull with hair. The boys reported the gruesome find to police, who uncovered a complete skeleton stuffed inside of the tree. It was determined that the victim was female, and not far away were also the remains of a hand and a gold wedding ring.

Investigators believed she died from suffocation and had been dead for at least 18 months, but were unable to identify her. With WWII raging, the number of missing people reported to police was overwhelming, and no one came the claim the body. A year later, this unsettling graffiti appeared on the Hagley Obelisk near to the tree where the woman was discovered......asking the eerie question, “Who put Bella in the Witch Elm?” despite the victim never being publicly called that name.

The location of her body is presently unknown and the autopsy from the investigation has long since vanished......making the identity of the mysterious woman a subject of intense intrigue amid rumor of witchcraft and ritual sacrifice. The real story of her death, however, may be even more fascinating and tied to a secret Nazi spy mission during WWII......after declassified British intelligence linked a German singer and movie actress, Clara Bauerle, to a captured Nazi agent. The agent’s file contained a photo of Beurle, who allegedly parachuted into England under the codename Clarabella. It is now thought that she may have been captured, killed, and hidden in a cover-up to prevent a local wartime panic...

The California way of killing business

For a sneak peek at a Biden presidency, just head to California, said Andy Kessler. Democrats have controlled the state assembly since 1997 and the governorship since 2011. As a result, “we’re No. 1 in the top marginal income tax rate at 13.3 percent” and No. 1 in state sales tax. This month, Californians “have been subjected to rolling blackouts because of the state’s renewable energy mandates,” since solar cells become worthless when the sun goes down every evening. The state then has to buy energy on the market, at exorbitant cost. We’re No. 3 in water prices, hurting the farmers who grow “90 percent of America’s broccoli, 95 percent of its garlic, and twothirds of fruits and nuts.” Now ask why your prices are going up. Then there’s Assembly Bill 5, the law the state passed to smother the gig economy. “What do the 300,000 Uber drivers and 200,000 Lyft drivers actually want, as opposed to what California says they want?” Doesn’t matter. The U.S. House of Representatives is already threatening to take some of these policies national, so “this craziness could be yours too.” Before remote work made it possible to live anywhere, this state was “blessed with tax dollars” from employees of Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Palantir—oops. Check that. Palantir is moving to Colorado. “Can’t say I blame them.”
